Hundreds of budding young rugby enthusiasts strapped on their boots on Sunday for the Gunnedah Junior Rugby Union’s annual carnival.
The second carnival for the Central North season, it was a fantastic day, Red Devils juniors secretary Carolyn Waerea said.
Because of its central location the Gunnedah carnival is usually one of the largest, and drew players from Walgett, Coonamble and Coonabarabran as well as throughout the Central North area and Armidale.
The hosts were represented in all five age divisions – U14s, U12s, U10s, U8s and U6s, with the carnival the U6’s first for the year.
The carnival was originally scheduled for June, but Coonabarabran swapped with them.
Being on Mother’s Day there was a special treat for the mums.
“We handed out chocolates for all the mothers,” Waerea said.
For the Red Devils U8s, the carnival came just a week after they’d had the excitement of playing at Allianz Stadium as a curtain raiser to the Waratahs Super Rugby clash with Auckland.
