“This is the first temporary road closure I have welcomed for a number of years,” said Councillor Alan Smith at a recent town council meeting.
“The carnival benefits the town and I’m over the moon it’s back. I hope there will be many more carnivals over the years.”
It has been resurrected after a five-year absence by town councillors Julie Laidlow and Isobel Burns, who have both been on the organising committee for 27 years.
They have applied to Allerdale council for the carnival route, from South Street, Lorton Street, Kirkgate, Market Place, Main Street and Wakefield Road, to be closed between 11.45am and 2.15pm.
