Acts lined up for Whitley Bay Carnival

Exciting plans are being finalised for performances at the Whitley Bay Carnival.

Organisers will stage a spectacular parade through the town, with promising world class talent at the Spanish City Plaza on Saturday, May 27.

Steve Cousins will be bringing the new Circus Central Puffin stage to the carnival with a show and workshops.

Irrwisch will be bringing its Wegenstreits Guests show from Austria and The Mortal Orchestra, which has toured the globe since its original commission for the North Shields Fish Quay Festival 30 years ago, will perform its farewell shows.

On Board Arts Maracatu dancers and drummers will lead this year’s parade and The Ski Band, Back Yard Rhythm Orchestra, The Baghdaddies and Meze Mundo will feature.

Gilly Love is co-ordinating a Big Sing event, bringing choirs together. Other acts include Whitley Bay’s Bay Uke, percussionist Simon Wood and comedian Si Buglass.

This year’s carnival will feature the first arts market with local artists demonstrating work including art prints, studio glass, ceramics, photography and jewellery.

Facepainter Laura Turnbull and photographer Denise Stutter will raise funds for next year’s carnival.

As well as the traditional carousel and shuggy boats, there will be a runaway train.

Refreshments and street food will also be on sale.

Carol Alevroyianni, carnival producer, said: “People have asked us if we could bring more art and craft stalls to the Carnival, which is why we have introduced the arts market.”

“ We didn’t want to just replicate other markets but something a bit more interactive providing a good showcase for the talented people we have locally.”

“Despite our real funding challenges this year, local businesses and residents have given generously and have offered so much in cash and in kind that we have been able to meet the cost of bringing some world class acts to Whitley Bay seafront.”
